Amnesty International, an international human rights body has urged the South African government to unfold hands concerning the issue of HIV and Aids. They say poor rural women are the victims of HIV in the country because they face sexual abuse and discrimination everyday when comparing to men. The report released earlier on in March stated that women under the age of 25 at risk four times to be infected with the virus than men of the same age, they additional said culture of violence and stigma worsen the problem.

According to the AI report women are everyday increasing their risk of contacting the virus because they are mostly affected by poverty, unemployment and they are being abused within the hands of men. With some 5.5 millions out of 48 millions South Africans believed to be carrying the virus, the shape has changed from gay, white males to poor women living in rural areas striven by poverty and unemployment, said the report. The report outlines that young women were up to four times more likely to be HIV positive than men of their same age 12 years after the country adopted a constitution guaranteed to equal rights to all citizens.
"Rural South African women's lives are scarred by persistent violence in their families, homes and in under-policed, unsafe communities," Michelle Kagari, Deputy Director of AI's Africa Programme, said in a statement. "The co-existence of the epidemics of both HIV and violence against women has raised the costs of violence for South African women and girls -both physically and psychologically," she added.
