Xenophobic behavior is embarrassment to South Africa

South Africa was well known in the world as a good stander for defending Human Rights, but this is now regarded as something of the past. Zolo Skweyiya of the office of the foreign affairs when speaking at an African day at Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg says the behavior of this kind hamper the good name of South Africa internationally. Skweyiya says he is afraid that these kinds of attacks will end up causing tension between South Africans and other nearest Africans.
Foreign Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma the violence is embarrassing to the government and it creates a bad name for the country. Dlamini-Zuma believes the attacks are caused by a mobilized group of people who’s intentions is to steal properties and benefit from where they did not plough and she is promising that her department will deal with this matter carefully and very seriously.

Opposition parties in South Africa and other members of the country who are against xenophobia are blaming Thabo Mbeki for not doing enough. They say Mbeki is not competent enough to deal with issues worrying the country. Buti Manamela the secretary general of Young Communist Party says President Mbeki failed to deal with the issue of HIV/AIDS and he also failed to mediate the political crisis in Zimbabwe.

Xenophobic attacks in South Africa spread to the forth province on Friday

"Citizens from other countries on the African continent and beyond are as human as we are and deserve to be treated with respect and dignity, "South Africa is not and will never be an island separate from the rest of the continent," the president of South Africa Thabo Mbeki said on Monday. Since then there was many xenophobic attacks and many people do not fear to say Mbeki do not have power to act against xenophobia in the country.
It is already the third week of sleepless days for foreigners who are living in South Africa, due to unstable behaviors of xenophobia. Yesterday the forth province which is Limpopo was reported to have inherited the xenophobic history of the already adopted provinces. People who were living in the area of Mohlaletse in Sekhukhune regions from Mozambique were attacked on Thursday night where by two of them are being treated at Jane Furze Hospital and others were taken to Apel police station in Ga-nkwana. The area police say few people who were arrested in regard to the matter will be brought to court as soon as possible.
Already 43 people lost their lives and more than 20 000 were evacuated from their shacks or homes since the eruption of this xenophobia in the whole country. People are condemning the behavior even if others are very angry on foreigners. The situation is reported to be very calm by now, but the police are ready to act if any violence can be reported in any part of the country.

Time management

Time management

For a person to succeed every where in everything he/she is doing, one should be able to manage his/her time correctly. Most people who are successful the first thing that they achieved before achieving others is how to manage their time. If one do not manage his/her time correctly he/she will never achieve.

What do we mean by time management: it simply means using your time correctly, knowing what you are going to do at this time and how long it is going to take. It also means respecting of time, knowing how much time cost. When we say someone has time management it means the person know how to use time.

For one to be able to manage his/her time, one should have a time table. This time table is for him/her to list all his/her activities. The person should be strict to his/herself, before doing everything check your time table, do not ever do something that is not there in your time table. In the past issue of student guide we spoke about reading skills, for you to be able to have reading skills you must plan how you are going to do it and the same principle still applies to this one of time management.

Let us use the method we used in the previous issue of Student Guide:
24 hr per day = 07 hr for sleep + 06 hr for classes + 04 hr for studying + 06/30 for refreshments + 30min for exercising.

The formula above shows you how much time you are going to use for what and it is up to you now to write a time table to divide again the times on what would you doing at the first hour of my study time, how will I divide my refreshment time.
Let us come to the conclusion, have a time table and include all activities on it because we do not want to do something that is not on the time table. Every time and time you will have to check it and after few days you will be used to it and you will again be used to use your time effectively. Try it and you will see how important time management it is.

Annette Nellen, a Professor in the Department of Accounting & Finance in College of Business San José State University suggested Seven Suggestions for Effectively Managing Your Time

1. Be Organized
2. Plan Ahead (Schedule it and it will happen!)
3. Prioritize Your Tasks
4. Avoid Overload
5. Practice Effective Study Techniques
6. Be Able to be Flexible
7. Have a Vision (why are you doing all of this?)

Reading Skills

Reading Skills

Reading is a very critical thing at school and even in overall life of an human being, In the last 40 years reading researchers have been studying the link between the reading process (what goes on in the brain) and how to teach reading. From the idea I also wanted to study how university students read, and I also studied how bruin memory work.

I have done this study because I realized that many university students or many students find themselves failing their courses but reading more that those who are passing. I came up with recommendations to students which I have been preaching since 2006 at university of Limpopo. Below is diagram of a brain and its memory function adapted from www.scienceblog.com

Below are the steps that I have recommended to students in relation to how the bruin memory works. This strategy of reading has worked and I encourage all students to try it maybe it can also work for them.
01. Make sure that you start reading from the first day of your school
Most people do not take care of their school work, they attend classes without revising their notes or visiting their textbooks, and this is unhealthy behavior of a student. Students should revise their work everyday after school to avoid last minutes piles of books to be read. If you are not revising your work everyday after class then you are increasing your work day by day.
02. Use less time to study and more time to refresh
Your mind need more time of refreshment, it need to be always fresh because if it is not fresh it will not do what you want it to do, and the minute it start that you will force it and it will teach you a lesson. Inside your brain there are two types of memories named short term memory and long term memory. How does this memories work? Let us start by a short term memory which sometimes is called working memory. There is something that we also need to touch before going too far:
Brain concentration
How long does your brain concentrate when doing serious matters, after how long do you feel tired when trying to concentrate on doing something? After how long do you feel tired when reading? According to psychologies a human brain can only concentrate for 25-35 minutes not more than that. What does this means, if you are reading and your exceed your brain concentration time limit which is 30 minutes you are not doing fair to your self because you need a rest.
Many people spent more than 04 Hours reading, and I wonder what their brain concentration time limit is. There is a thing called crossnighting, the process where by student spent the whole night reading or studying. That it totally unhealthy because one has spent the whole day going up and down, your brain never got a time to rest. As a student you must learn when and how to refresh your brain so that it can work effectively for you.
03. How your brain memory work
Your brain has two memories named short and long term memory. Let us discuss about them one by one:
Short Term Memory
This memory is also called working memory, its role is to memorize anything that happens within a short period of time. Earlier we spoke about brain concentration, and when saying a short term period we mean the brain concentration time. Your short term memory will memorize everything that happens within its concentration time limits e.g. 30 minutes. If you continue reading or studying after your brain concentration time limit it means the short memory will start afresh memorizing new things that it acquires and also start deleting all information it memorized earlier before reaching its concentration time limit of 30 minutes.

Long Term Memory
It is also known as a reflective memory, its role is to permanently save information or save information for a long time. For information to be in this type of memory it needs to be saved in the short term memory first and the short term memory will transfer the information in to it if it is important. There is a good relationship between the two memories and people should also build a good relationship between these memories in order for them to work for them.
04. How to make a brain work well for you
Everyone should make sure that he/she know and understand his/her brain concentration time limit. If you know that, it means you will make sure that when you reach the concentration limit you stop what ever you are doing, so that it can be refreshed. Calculate the time that you use for academic everyday, and also calculate a time that you use for refreshment everyday out of 24hours. How many hours are for sleep, reading or studying, refreshments, classes and exercising?
Have a good sleep
Students should make sure that they have a good sleep, that is were your brain and your memories will also have a good time to rest. 6-7 hours of a sleep is enough for a student, do not sleep less than 5hours never and never. Sleeping is good for your brain and your body.
Reading and studying time
Four hours for studying is enough for the day, do not use this four hours consecutively, divide them times four. E.g. In the morning, during the day, afternoon and in the evening. Use one hour for one subject, 30 minutes them a break and another last 30 minutes.
Check time you spent in lecture halls attending classes
Mostly a student attends six or less than six classes per day, which means he/she may be using only five hours for attending lectures. Did you ever ask why classes do not spend more than one hour? It is because they have calculated the average brain concentration time limit. And between classes there is a fifteen minutes break.
Do you have time to exercise?
Exercising is a very exciting thing that its role is to maintain your body temperature and to keep your body healthy and fit. It also help to keep your mind open and refreshed, most people after exercising they feel like new and fresh. As a student spent 30 minutes everyday for exercising. E.g. Running, going to gym or having a pushups.

Refreshment is very good for you
Have time to be with your friends, go shopping, have a walk, cook for your self, go for sports, maybe seven hours. This also means going to parties, movies and church and attending university events in general. Divide this seven hours according to things to do, do not use it consecutively.
Let us now do mathematical calculations:
24 hr per day = 07 hr for sleep + 06 hr for classes + 04 hr for studying + 06/30 for refreshments + 30min for exercising.
This is how students should try to use their time in order to manage their school work and in order to read effectively.
Good luck with your reading.

Student Guide

Adaptation to a University life

A life at university is a totally different life when comparing to all lifestyles, because people who attend a tertiary education are from different lifestyle background, and they are from different countries, provinces and villages. Every one of them had a type of life he/she was living at her/his place. When all type of life styles and backgrounds meet a one complex type of life style is formed and it is called a Tertiary Life Style. Although all students will end up enjoying this type of life style, there are few steps that the first entering students should follow to adapt quickly this unique life style.

01. Make Sure that you apply for university admission early

New students should apply early to high institutions to avoid last minutes rush and disappointments. After admitted and registered, make sure that you collect all documents needed e.g. Student Card, Cafeteria Smart Card and Library Card.

02. Find a mentor

Make sure that you find a mentor as soon as you finish the process of registrations and accessing all documents needed. A mentor is somebody who will mentor you through everything that involves the academic work at a university. This person is also responsible to clarify you with everything that concern the academic work.

03. What about finding a friend?

Being alone is something that will make you adapt to the university life style after long time, without a friend you will be lonely, stay in your room, go to library, go to lecture rooms and sleep, which is not healthy. Get a friend that you will talk with, go around with and go for shopping with. In most universities all first entering students are occupying only double rooms where by they have room mates, this was meant to make sure that every one have a friend or someone to make her/him busy.

04. Know your University

With the help of your friend you will not be afraid of going around the university, checking all services that are offered for students e.g. Health, Counseling, Arts and et cetera. This is to make sure that you are familiar with all buildings around the campus, some universities are big enough whereby you may not be able to know all sides, but it is advisable for you to know it.

05. What about your resource places

Library, Computer Laboratory, Photocopying Room and others. Make sure that you visit them very often because it is your resource room, your books and computers are there. You may also go there for refreshment, read novels and surf the net.

06. Any Events to attend?

Check around the campus, is there any notices talking about events? Have a look and make sure that you check many of them very often. Attending events can help you and your mind, this one is regarded as refreshment. Be aware of being a party animal! Do not be one.

Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka is satisfied with the progress made at Peter Mokaba Stadium

Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka visited the City of Polokwane in Limpopo, she ended her visit on a positive note that the city has made wonderful progress, but also indicated that a lot still needs to be done in preparation for 2010. Her visit to Polokwanein was in line with her programme to visit 2010 host cities to monitor progress made in respect of preparations to host World Cup Games.
Her first visit was to the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality in the Eastern Cape. The Deputy President indicated that this programme of visits was initiated as part of the Presidency and the 2010 Inter Ministerial Committee’s oversight tool, "and it will be routine to monitor and evaluate progress".
"We are basically here to check if everything is in place, if there is concrete on the floor and how much, if there are enough bricks and how many, to check if you are on course, and if not, why", said the Deputy President as she explained her purposed of the visit.
"I would like to thank you mayor and the province for the progress made. Clearly from the presentation you made it shows that you have taken a broad approach", she said. Although the Deputy President was happy with the progress she also emphasized that the challenges are the major problems. She outlined that the challenge of budget overrun of about 260 millions is an issue that all tiers of government should look at seriously.
The deputy President also suggested that the Department of Public Works be brought on board for adherence and to monitor if the city and the province were getting a fair deal from the service providers.
The City of Polokwane has since July of 2006 established a dedicated 2010 FIFA World Cup unit with a clear plan that addresses amongst others:- integrated infrastructure development, ICT infrastructure development; legacy issues and marketing and communication.
The stadium is expected to be finished in June 2009.
