Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka visited the City of Polokwane in Limpopo, she ended her visit on a positive note that the city has made wonderful progress, but also indicated that a lot still needs to be done in preparation for 2010. Her visit to Polokwanein was in line with her programme to visit 2010 host cities to monitor progress made in respect of preparations to host World Cup Games.
Her first visit was to the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality in the Eastern Cape. The Deputy President indicated that this programme of visits was initiated as part of the Presidency and the 2010 Inter Ministerial Committee’s oversight tool, "and it will be routine to monitor and evaluate progress".
"We are basically here to check if everything is in place, if there is concrete on the floor and how much, if there are enough bricks and how many, to check if you are on course, and if not, why", said the Deputy President as she explained her purposed of the visit.
"I would like to thank you mayor and the province for the progress made. Clearly from the presentation you made it shows that you have taken a broad approach", she said. Although the Deputy President was happy with the progress she also emphasized that the challenges are the major problems. She outlined that the challenge of budget overrun of about 260 millions is an issue that all tiers of government should look at seriously.
The deputy President also suggested that the Department of Public Works be brought on board for adherence and to monitor if the city and the province were getting a fair deal from the service providers.
The City of Polokwane has since July of 2006 established a dedicated 2010 FIFA World Cup unit with a clear plan that addresses amongst others:- integrated infrastructure development, ICT infrastructure development; legacy issues and marketing and communication.
The stadium is expected to be finished in June 2009.
